Follow the Bubbles

March 15, 2019 By Hoopeston Church Leave a Comment

I’ve heard when you go deep into the ocean you can lose your direction. Your body feels weightless and because the light is refracted, you can’t tell which way is up. At times divers have gone horizontally or even deeper and run out of air because they think they are going to the surface when they are not. There is a mental disturbance called nitrogen narcosis that leads to irrational thinking which can complicate matters.

A simple rule of thumb I have heard is to follow the bubbles. When you exhale the bubbles will always rise to the surface because air is lighter than water. That will always give you direction, regardless of being disoriented.

In the middle of life’s situations sometimes we can lose our perspective too. Has that ever happened to you? I’ve heard it said more than once, “God and I have an understanding about…” and the person proceeds to share how something that they are participating in (which is clearly contrary to God’s word) really is okay for them. They are the exception.

It is true that each one of us are special and unique. And God will lead us on the paths to learn the lessons He has for us that are important for our next steps. However, there is only one standard that matters. It is not mine and it is not yours. The Bible is our guideline – God’s eternal word. When our lives don’t line up with the word of God, we are in error… always. And when “the Word became flesh,” we were able to see God’s standard put into practice in Jesus. Jesus is our example for life.

The names of Jesus we are talking about Sunday are, our Cornerstone and our Capstone. A cornerstone is the way of evaluating where the straight lines are on the building. It aligns us when our perspective may be distorted. The cornerstone will always show us which way is straight and how to line up our lives. Our Cornerstone sees clearly. In a way, He is the path of the bubbles to follow when we get confused.

Jesus is.

Let’s talk about it further. I’m looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!
