Why do we exist?
We, the Church of God in Hoopeston, exist to glorify God through equipping people for life and ministry.
We do this by striving to foster a loving, welcoming, compassionate environment where people at all stages of their spiritual and life journeys can come and worship, fellowship, and belong.
Our objective is to see people come to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, redeeming them to God our creator, and equipping them to live an abundant life with the help of His Holy Spirit.
All of these are accomplished while drawing closer to God and one another in love.
What do we believe?
Some churchgoers may take these beliefs for granted. Others are brand-new Christians with questions. And still others might be looking for a starting point to study further the Word of God. No matter how many steps you’ve taken with the Lord, we’re happy to provide an easy-to-understand guide to the truths we believe God has confirmed to us time and time again.
We believe the Bible to be God’s infallible, inerrant and inspired Word. The Bible is Divinely inspired, written by man at the direction of God. The Bible is the authority on man’s origin and reveals God’s plan for humanity past, present, and future. The Bible is the final authority on all matters of faith and practice. It is our instruction manual for life.
We believe there is one true and eternal God who exists eternally in three persons:
- Creator God – Creator of heaven, earth, and all of us, divinely sustaining His creation and operating within history to fulfill His redemptive purposes and plan.
- Jesus Christ – The Word become flesh. Fully united with humanity by a miraculous conception and virgin birth. Jesus lived a perfect life and paid the price for our sins by dying on the cross to redeem us to God. He then was raised according to the Scriptures and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will return to fulfill history and the plan of God. He is the object of our worship and the subject of our praise.
- The Holy Spirit – Christians are to live holy lives under the influence of and with the help of the Holy Spirit, the third member of the eternal Godhead. The Holy Spirit renews and indwells believers and helps us to live a life of love, forgiveness and holiness.
We believe that because of sin, man is without hope of Heaven, separated from God because of sin: the fall of mankind from God’s perfect plan. Only through confessing our sinful natures, repenting, and having faith in Jesus Christ can salvation be attained. It cannot be earned through good works alone; instead it is God’s gift of love to all who will accept it. Those who accept Jesus should repent, confess their faith, be baptized and seek out a Bible-believing church to serve in and live out their destiny in Christ.
All who acknowledge Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are members of His body: the one true church. Scripture commands believers to gather together for worship, prayer, fellowship and the teaching/hearing of the Word; to observe Baptism and Communion; and to serve each other and the world by reaching out in love using their gifts, abilities, and resources to do so. The local expression of the church is wherever people meet regularly in obedience to these commands. The church is not a building. It is the people. The church is to be a light to the world.
